Under 8s’ Day was a celebration of early childhood and the important role that play-based learning has in supporting young children’s development. The event aimed to recognise the learning, growth and wellbeing of students in the early years, while also strengthening connections between families, the school and early learning providers.
“Under 8s’ Day is an annual celebration we are proud to support, as it aligns closely with our commitment to early intervention, positive relationships and giving children a strong start to their schooling journey,” explains Susan Spackman, Principal at TSS. “It also provides a valuable opportunity to work alongside families and local early childhood partners.”
Students under eight years of age took part in a variety of hands-on, age-appropriate activities designed to encourage creativity, cooperation and enjoyment. Older students supported the day by helping with activities and being positive role models, and families were warmly invited to attend and share the morning with their children, helping to strengthen the home–school connection. Glencore, the local Ambulance, Police, and Fire Brigade were also in attendance, along with representatives from Central Highlands Regional Council.
The young children particularly enjoyed the interactive, play-based experiences that allowed them to explore, create and learn alongside their peers. Activities that encouraged teamwork, movement and imagination were especially popular. For Bryce, “the best part of the day was face painting!” and fellow little learner, Lorelai, was “most proud of my drawing.”
“One standout aspect of the day was seeing students from different year levels learning and playing together. The sense of excitement and engagement across the school highlighted the success of the event and the positive relationships within our community,” reflects Susan.
Events like Under 8s’ Day help build strong relationships between students, families and staff. They also highlight the importance of early learning and wellbeing, while fostering a sense of belonging and pride in our school community.
The overall response to the event was extremely positive, with students, families and staff enjoying the relaxed, inclusive atmosphere and the opportunity to celebrate our youngest learners together.
“We hope the students took away a sense of joy, confidence and belonging, as well as positive memories of learning through play and being celebrated as an important part of our school community,” says Susan.
Families are encouraged to keep an eye on the school newsletter and communications for upcoming celebrations, assemblies and community events happening throughout the term.
