It’s definitely not a case of all work and no play at Tieri State School! Here’s a little snapshot of some of the fun they’ve been having recently…
The school opened its doors to the town’s youngest residents on Friday, 12th May for its annual Under 8s Day.
Guests from C&K Kindergarten, Tieri Daycare Centre, Ladybugs & Rugrats (Tieri’s Family Day Care), Tieri Possums Playgroup, and Mums n Bubs groups from the local area were invited to a morning of fun and entertainment whilst they explored the school.
Teacher and Coordinator, Taylor Hurst, described the objective of the day as “supporting the next wave of kids to transition from their current environment to the school”. She added that it was also about community engagement and getting whole families involved, even those whose kids have left the school.
From fire trucks to facepainting to footy drills and skills, there was plenty for the kids – and adults to explore.
“We aimed to include a combination of activities that were fun, educational and sensory, and would expose kids to what they would do at the school,” explained Taylor.
The Library showcased their under-5 agility program and books, there was an ambulance simulator, cupcake decorating, a playdough table, a photobooth, a collage group used “The Very Cranky Bear” to create an art piece, an obstacle course and Glencore gave kids a glimpse into a long wall mine using virtual reality!
“All the organisations helped to create a really special day, with such a positive, energetic vibe – we’ve received great feedback. You could see the enjoyment on the kid’s faces, especially at the tackling stations set up and run by the Peak Downs Pirates, they were a huge hit!”
Tieri State School sends a big thanks to everyone that supported Under 8’s Day, including:
On Wednesday 17th and Thursday 18th May, Uncle Arthur returned to Tieri State School to run a series of art and dance classes with the students to help raise cultural awareness and embed the Indigenous perspectives.
‘Deadly Arthur’, the name he goes by for his work, designs such lessons for schools, communities, and organisations. Last year, he completed all of the artwork around Tieri State School.
This year, Uncle Arthur and Tieri’s students brought new life to old picnic tables, painting them in traditional Indigenous designs. Be sure to check them out next time you pass the school.
“The kids – and teachers – love their lessons with Uncle Arthur, the vibe is electric. They love learning the history and ways of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and creating something that reflects their rich culture. We look forward to having Uncle Arthur visit us again soon.”
Tieri turned tropical on Friday 9th June as students enjoyed a Hawaiian ‘Splash’-themed disco.
The town was awash with splashes of colour as kids donned their best Hawaiian or ocean-inspired outfit, competing for the honour of ‘best-dressed’. Congratulations to [Insert winner’s name/s] who took home the much-coveted title and prize of [what? Donated by who?].
Hawaiian-inspired accessories, snacks, lollies and drinks were available for purchase, along with games, a photobooth and, of course, music and dancing.
“A big shout out to our P&C for organising such a fantastic party for the kids, they had great fun…and so did the adults!”
Coming soon at Tieri State School will be NAIDOC Day (National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee) in July to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
And don’t miss the School Fete on Friday 25th August, to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of Tieri!
