OCC Team Members Honoured at QMRS Awards Night

In 2025, Queensland Mines Rescue Service (QMRS) was successful in securing the prestigious Australian National Medal for Service for team members who have dedicated 15 years or more of service to the mines rescue community. 

The National Medal is one of Australia’s most esteemed service awards. It is a rare honour awarded by the Australian Government in recognition of long-term dedication, diligence, and commitment to roles that protect life and property. It highlights the significant sacrifices and efforts our volunteer team members give to the benefit of others. 

On the 10th June 2026, two members of Oaky Creek Coal (OCC) were presented with the National Medal at a formal Service Awards Presentation Evening in Emerald: Belinda Duffy and Francis Rolls!

The following individuals were also recognised for the QMRS Service Badge for their years of service to Mines Rescue:
• Leslee Kerle
• Downie Langthorne
• Clint Sullivan
• James Vardanega

This is a phenomenal achievement that acknowledges each of their outstanding contributions to mines rescue at OCC, and across the industry. 

“Whether it is ‘basic’ first aid lifting or conducting an escape from the mine, these people have spent countless hours above and beyond their role to train and practice to an exceptional level. It is incredibly reassuring – and humbling – to know that, in an emergency, we have such knowledgeable, disciplined and caring people in our team that we can rely on to get themselves and others to safety,” says Bernie Lambley, Operations Manager at OCC.

“Dedicating yourself to mines rescue for even a couple of years is a big commitment. To do so for a decade or more is an amazing accomplishment and a credit to those who have achieved this prestigious recognition.
