Protect Yourself This Winter

As the months get colder, it’s a good time to think about the influenza vaccination. Every year, these viruses cause lost time at school, work, and even hospitalisation for vulnerable members of our community. 

“Our immune system is like our personal internal army that fights against invading viruses and pathogens or germs,” explains Yvette Watts, registered nurse at Tieri Medical Practice. 

Vaccination against the flu helps to preserve those soldiers so they are ready to fight against multiple assaults from the many thousands of viruses around us. Without vaccination, we are far more susceptible to contracting the virus and experiencing more severe symptoms – especially young people, the elderly, pregnant women and anyone who is immunocompromised.”

In 2026, all Queenslanders aged six-months and over are eligible for a FREE influenza vaccination as part of the Queensland Immunisation Program. 

In a welcome development, the Immunisation Program has extended its cover of FluMist for two- to five-year-olds to now include six- to 17-year-olds who find the injections overwhelming. 

“Please feel free to ask the GP or myself for an update of your immunisation schedule; we hope to see you at the Practice soon,” encourages Yvette.

Quality sleep is one of the cornerstones of health and longevity. 

If you snore, or are feeling tired and unrefreshed after a night’s sleep, it can really affect your daily life, so it’s worth a check in with your GP to investigate the cause. 

“Sleep disorders do more than make you sleepy. If left untreated, they can contribute to heart disease, diabetes, and other long-term health risks,” Yvette explains. 

Tieri Medical Practice offers local sleep studies, which are quick and easy to set up with results back to the GP in a matter of weeks.
