In a major achievement, the Department of Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation (DETSI) has certified an additional 879.82 hectares of rehabilitation across OCC’s operation.
To put this into perspective, that’s an area equivalent to approximately 1,240 NRL football fields!
This latest certification brings Oaky Creek’s total certified rehabilitation area to 3,812.64 hectares, representing a significant rehabilitation achievement within the Queensland resources sector. The total certified area is now approximately 2.6 times larger than Great Keppel Island, demonstrating the scale of rehabilitation efforts undertaken across the site.
“Achieving certification from DETSI is a critical milestone for OCC as it provides independent verification that the rehabilitated land meets strict regulatory requirements and agreed completion criteria,” explains Madison Bennett, Environment and Community Advisor at OCC.
“It reflects years of planning, earthworks, soil management, vegetation establishment, monitoring, and ongoing maintenance, and is something the team is very proud of.”
In another major milestone, after approximately five years of development, consultation, and regulatory review, OCC has successfully secured approval of its Progressive Rehabilitation and Closure Plan (PRCP) and accompanying PRCP Schedule. The approved PRCP provides a clear framework for how disturbed land will be progressively rehabilitated throughout the life of the operation and beyond, ensuring rehabilitation activities continue to deliver sustainable outcomes for future land use.
