On Thursday 28th May, Tieri State School (TSS) transformed into a sporting arena as students celebrated physical activity, teamwork and school spirit during Athletics Day.
The event aimed to give all students the opportunity to participate in a range of athletics activities, experience friendly competition and enjoy an inclusive environment where effort and participation are valued.
Families were invited to attend and support students from the sidelines, helping to create a positive and encouraging atmosphere. Community involvement added to the sense of pride and connection within the school.
“Athletics Day is an important part of our school sporting calendar and reflects our commitment to developing healthy, active lifestyles in students. It also provides opportunities for students to practice resilience, sportsmanship and perseverance in a supportive setting,” explains Susan Spackman, Principal of TSS.
Students participated in a range of track and field style activities that were modified to suit different age groups and abilities. All students were encouraged to take part, support one another and demonstrate positive sporting behaviour throughout the morning.
“The best part of the day was the running,” says Eddie, a student at TSS. “One thing we were most proud of was the racing,” agrees fellow student, Theo.
Novelty athletics activities were other highlights for many of the students, as they allowed children to challenge themselves, cheer on their peers and experience success in different ways.
“There was a really strong sense of house spirit and encouragement shown by students across all year levels,” reflects Susan. “The opportunity for students to step outside the classroom and showcase their physical skills was an important highlight of the event.”
Sporting events such as Athletics Day help build a strong sense of belonging and teamwork within the school. They promote physical wellbeing, confidence and resilience, while also strengthening partnerships between families and the school, as well as with the broader community.
“We hope students left the day with a sense of achievement, enjoyment and pride in themselves, as well as positive memories of participation, teamwork and fair play,” says Susan.
The Athletics Day event was generously supported by parent volunteers, including members of the P&C who assisted with the smooth running of the day by providing food for our staff and students. Their time and support were greatly appreciated by all.
