Stay Safe This Summer

9 Dec 2024

As summer heats up, it’s vital to prioritise safety for you and your family. From staying hydrated to protecting yourself in extreme weather, these tips will help you enjoy the season safely.

Heat Safety

  • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, even if you don’t feel thirsty.
  • Avoid outdoor activities during the hottest parts of the day.
  • Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing and apply sunscreen regularly.
  • When going on a walk with your pets – make sure the ground is not too hot. If you can’t touch the ground with your hand for longer than seven seconds, it’s too hot for your pets’ paws.
  • Learn the symptoms of heat related illnesses – these can include dizziness, nausea and more.

Water Safety

  • Ensure children are supervised around water at all times.
  • Wear life jackets when boating or engaging in water sports.
  • Always ensure that any pool fences, gates, or barriers are well maintained and closed at your home pool.

UV Protection

  • Use broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30+ and reapply every two hours.
  • Wear a hat, sunglasses, and protective clothing.
  • Seek shade during peak UV hours (10 am–4 pm).

Bushfire Awareness

  • Be prepared with a bushfire survival plan and know your local fire danger rating.
  • Clear leaves and debris from your property to reduce fire risks.
  • Monitor updates from local fire authorities and follow evacuation advice.

This summer, let’s look out for each other, stay aware, and stay safe!
